CeeLo Green Deletes Twitter Account After Making Awful Rape Comments

CeeLo Green has deleted his Twitter account after posting a series of tweets that appeared to condone (or at least excuse) rape, after appearing in court and pleading no contest to spiking a woman’s drink with ecstasy.

The woman claimed that the former Gnarls Barkley/Goodie Mob singer had dined with her in a sushi restaurant in 2012, with her then having no memory of the rest of the evening due to being slipped an ecstasy pill, before waking up naked the next morning in Green’s bed. Green’s lawyer claimed that the woman and Green had consensual relations, with no rape charges being filed due to a lack of evidence. However, Green’s own comments made on Twitter following the court ruling seems to indicate that even if nothing untoward happened that evening, he’s still a bit of a dick.

After his appearance in court, Green tweeted: “People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!” Followed by: “If someone is passed out they’re not even WITH you consciously! so WITH Implies consent.”

The 40-year-old singer later removed the tweets, posting: “I sincerely apologize for my comments being taken so far out of context … I’d never condone the harm of any women.” He later deleted his Twitter account.

Twitter is a notoriously difficult platform in which to air one’s grievances given its 140-character limit, but even so I’m not really sure how Green’s opinion that rape can only take place when the victim is unconscious has been misinterpreted here, unless he wasn’t in control of his own fingers when tweeting said opinion.

While a spokesperson for The Voice, the reality singing contest in which Green acts as a judge, has previously stated that the singer will not be removed from its panel, I’m certain that these comments will force them to reconsider their stance. Green will appear back in court in November where he will learn whether he is found guilty of the charges, but his opinion on what does/does not constitute rape surely won’t help his defense.
