In just a few short days Destiny will be released (September 9th), and you know what that means. Yup, it’s time to decide which class to play.
Destiny may only have three classes, but they are different enough in design and style that they cover most of the RPG spectrum. For RPG veterans, it shouldn’t be too difficult of a decision. But for those who aren’t completely sure of what they enjoy playing, it’s a big decision that could directly impact how much they enjoy their time in Destiny.

Below we’ve created a guide which goes over all the essential information regarding each class, as well as a brief synopsis of who the class is intended for.
Note: Although we specify ‘favorite weapons’, all three classes can use ANY weapon type in the game. Therefore, favorite weapon is more of a stylistic choice to help you get an idea of what the class is all about.
Hunter
Vitals:
Favorite Weapons – Scout rifles, sniper rifles, hand cannons, knives
Armor – Medium
Primary Role – Damage
Similar To – Bounty Hunter
Subclasses:
Gunslinger – A master of firearms. Capable of devastating damage from range.
Bladedancer – Excels at assassinating enemies with blades and agility.
Details:
The Hunter is a class loosely based around the Rogue or Thief in many other RPGs. It is moderately armored, deferring to evasion for survival. What it lacks in defense it more than makes up for in damage, though. Hunters believe that a good offense is the best defense.
Players who enjoy the Hunter are those who enjoy having the highest damage possible. The Hunter has utility, but is primarily interested in inflicting high, sustainable damage. They require a lot of finesse since they attract a lot of attention and can’t take many hits. If you can learn how to be observative and on-point, the Hunter can be an extremely thrilling class to play. Played well, it’s the most effective solo class in the game.
Titan
Vitals:
Favorite Weapons – Auto rifles, pulse rifles, shotguns, heavy weapons
Armor – Heavy
Primary Role – Tank
Similar to – The Terminator
Subclasses:
Striker – A spec that isn’t afraid of getting into melee range and cause havoc.
Defender – Indestructible. The closest thing to an M1A3 Abrams in Destiny.
Details:
The Titan is a heavily armored force to be reckoned with. Instead of running around trying to evade fire, they jump right into the thick of things, taking out foes with powerful weapons. Any average enemies that go toe-to-toe with a Titan are in for a hard lesson.
Players who enjoy the Titan are those who love being a leader in groups, or a difficult to kill threat when alone. The Titan leads the charge for parties, and is responsible for ensuring that enemies are focused on them. Because of this, they are sought after in groups for their usefulness. When solo, they kill slower than the other two classes, but are able to leverage their high sustainability to stay in combat and continue punishing enemies.

Armor – Light
Primary Role – Support
Similar to – Gandalf
Subclasses:
Sunsinger – Supports team mates with helpful abilities while dictating the flow of battle with crowd control.
Voidwalker – A master of high damage using void energy to blow away enemies.
Details:
The Warlock is the magic user of the game, capable of causing beautiful explosions. They prefer to be behind the front line, carefully projecting their magical powers onto enemies to impose their will.
Players who enjoy the Warlock are those who enjoy being in control of the battlefield. Warlocks have abilities that allow them to trap foes, and utility to assist teammates. That said, their damage is very respectable, so while they are the premier support class of the game, they aren’t to be trifled with.
Final Notes
You might still be having difficulty choosing a class, but don’t worry about it too much because you can create several characters.
Post-beta polls show that the Warlock is the most popular of the three, while TItan is the least popular by a considerable margin. If you’re interested in being sought after, Titan is a great choice.

Destiny is an online game, and one that is certain to be very popular, so you may want to discuss class choice with your friends before playing. I’ve had situations in other games where all my friends are interested in a single class, which made it easy for me to rule that one out. It might be the same case for you.
