BlizzCon 2014: Overwatch Replaces Project Titan, Titan’s Death Happened “Long Ago”

Today Blizzard announced a brand new IP called Overwatch. It’s a 6v6 first-person shooter, the first of its kind from the studio. As with Blizzard’s other projects, it’s ambitious, tossing away norms in an attempt to reinvigorate a genre.

The announcement comes just weeks after the confirmation that Project Titan, a game that was supposed to be Blizzard’s next MMO, has been canceled. The question is, do these games line up?

During the Overwatch Q&A session, a person asked about whether or not Overwatch was influenced by Project Titan. Chris Metzen replied:

Many of you may have seen, we did a big article with Polygon about a month ago putting Titan to bed. That had actually happened a long time ago.

He continued:

We decided internally to go another way. So, what really happened is we decided to go this way. Overwatch is a very different game than what we were planning to build. And it’s kinda weird, it’s like we don’t even want to get into what we were planning to build. It was kooky and ambitious. It’s a long-term relationship. But I think there are elements of Overwatch that probably have some spiritual continuity with Titan. There were ideas about Titan that were Earth based and things like that. So, there are few ideas that we’ve used to platform off of as we began Overwatch. But it’d be difficult to explain to you just how different they are. The big thing with Overwatch I think was, whatever Titan was going to be, we decided to make a game about heroes, and that transformed our thinking about what we wanted to build.

Some information about Project Titan has leaked over the years hinting at it being an MMOFPS within a steampunk-flavored universe. Judging by Metzen’s remark, apparently Blizzard invested a lot of time and effort into the project. Sadly, it wouldn’t pan out.

Given Project Titan was supposedly a game played from the first person perspective, something unfamiliar with Blizzard, there’s no doubt that the years of development on Project Titan has aided Overwatch in some way or another. However, at the end of the day they are two very different games, with Overwatch being the much more focused experience of the two.
