This War of Mine developer 11 Bit Studios is giving away free copies of the game to those who illegally downloaded it on The Pirate Bay.

PC gaming is blighted by piracy, but 11 Bit Studios implemented a rather unique way of attempting to combat it. Taking to the comments section of a thread distributing the game for free, the studio wrote: “It’s Karol from 11 bit studios, the developers of This War of Mine.
“We are really happy to hear that you like our game. They prove, that spending 2 years on it was worth it.
“I would like to say thank you to everyone, who decides to buy the game and support us – because of that we’ll be able to develop TWoM further and create even better games in the future.
“If because of some reasons you can’t buy the game, it’s ok. We know life, and we know, that sometimes it’s just not possible.
“Here are some codes for the steam copy of the game, so some of you can take a look at it. And if you like the game after spending few hours in, then just spread the word, and you’ll help us a lot.”
Piracy is a huge threat to video game creators, particularly to independent developers, but 11 Bit Studios’ comments are sure to give those who were looking to pirate the game some food for thought. There are real people behind those games, and they put time, money and effort into them, which they deserve to be rewarded for.
Fortunately, This War of Mine is receiving some great reviews and is attracting a lot of attention, so Karol and the rest of the team at 11 Bit will likely find themselves in good fortunes soon enough.
