Louis van Gaal Has Ignored Alex Ferguson as He Tries to Strengthen Man United Squad

Louis van Gaal has said that he is going to ignore the advice offered to him from former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, as he continues to try to get the club back to its winning ways.

Despite an incredibly poor start to the season, Van Gaal has helped to turn United’s fortunes around somewhat, with them now set to travel to Aston Villa on the back of six consecutive wins. Despite this, the Dutch manager believes that the quality of the performances put in by United are still not up to standard, though advice given to him by Ferguson, who still keeps a watchful eye over the club, suggests that he should loosen his grip over United and praise the team for getting the points, no matter how they do so.

Van Gaal said: “I’m not only focused on results, although of course that’s the main thing. When I speak with Sir Alex he says: ‘There’s no problem – you’ve won’.

“But for me it’s also the performance, because when you perform well you win more. That’s what I want to show to the fans, and the players want to show that, and the guarantee of wins is much bigger when we perform better.”

Van Gaal then referred to United’s recent match against Hull, in which the team won with a decisive 3-0 victory.

“The game against Hull was a good game – we dominated 90 minutes, and I want to see more games like that,” the managed continued. “There are too few games where we are dominating 90 minutes.

“That’s a process, and we have to wait and see, but of course when you win six times in a row the confidence is rising. I’m still looking for a game that’s closer to the perfect game than we have given until now.”

Despite languishing around the bottom half of the table at the start of the season, United now sit in third place behind derby rivals Manchester City and league leaders Chelsea, with an eight point gap between United and the top spot.
