ESPN’s Stuart Scott Dead At 49

Over a span of seven years, 21-year veteran broadcaster of ESPN, Stuart Scott, battled cancer three separate times. After yet another lengthy fight, the North Carolina native passed away Sunday morning at the age of 49.

It’s a tremendous loss for the iconic persona, a man who revolutionized sports broadcasting from his debut in 1993. Of course he was much more than a clever catch phrase, but if you’ve ever heard “Boo-Yah!” or “as cool as the other side of the pillow,” those were coined via Scott.

ESPN has a very detailed obituary and 15 minute package tribute to him here.

As one can imagine, it was very hard for his long-time colleagues to break the news of his death Sunday morning. However, they did a fantastic job at not just releasing the information, but describing the man, friend, father and mentor he was.

Here is the emotional speech Scott gave at the 2014 ESPY awards last summer while accepting the “Jimmy V Award for Perseverance” — a speech that is the most inspiring we’ve seen since Jimmy V’s in 1993.
