BBC Radio 1 has responded to allegations that the radio station has refused to play her music because of her age.
Responding to a report in the Mail on Sunday which suggested that the 56-year-old was too old for their audience, the station released a statement saying: “Radio 1 does not ban anyone – please don’t believe the papers.
The tracks played on Radio 1 are chosen on musical merit and their relevance to our young audience on a case-by-case basis, and whilst around 40% of the country’s 15 to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist’s age is never a factor.
“In fact, Paul McCartney currently has two tracks – ‘FourFiveSeconds’ and ‘Only One’ – on the Radio 1 playlist.”

Radio 1 didn’t reveal why Madonna, whose latest single ‘Living For Love’ has reportedly only been played once on the station since its release in December, isn’t featured on their playlists, though it’s likely something to do with it being both a sales flop and a turgid trainwreck of a pop song.
Considering Madonna has one of the most terrifyingly devoted fanbases in music, that six tracks from her latest LP Rebel Heart plummeted out of the top 100 shortly following the album’s release suggests that even they failed to lap it up. This is despite Madonna going on a PR offensive prior to the LP’s release, posting a series of images on social media featuring various important and influential historical figures with black rope crudely PhotoShopped across their faces, in order to resemble the front cover of the album in which Madonna is adopting the same pose.
Unfortunately, the copious amounts of negative attention thrown her way didn’t translate to album sales, and she was left to consider her own nosedive into irrelevancy. If we were here, we’d perhaps start at her attempt at reggae:
