At The Bar With Priory: A Lesson in American Whiskey & The ‘Real Man’ Way To Drink

Portland dance-rock duo Priory are gearing up for their major-debut full-length LP on Warner Bros this March, with Spike Stent (Massive Attack, Bjork, Oasis) sharing production duties. In addition to the momentum of their inescapable hit “Weekend,” several high-profile appearances will buoy the release this year, including scheduled appearances at this year’s Governors Ball as well as the Bonnaroo Arts & Music Festival (get ready for those glow-in-the-dark onesies!) and more.

We met up with the duo of Brandon Rush and Kyle Sears on a gorgeous day in Santa Monica at The Craftsman, to discuss the new Priory album and their upcoming plans for 2015, as well as the evolving definition of manhood in today’s world. In part two of our interview, the guys discuss the intricacies and appreciation of home brewing and American whiskey, something on which the PDX pair have a razor’s edge of insight.

Among his many non-musical trades, Brandon is an avid beermaker, operating a double-barrel system with a 200 gallon stainless steel fermenter in the basement while they rock in the studio upstairs. While there’s a lot of love for the fine Kentucky straight Buffalo Trace, their go-to whiskey at home in the studio, in the clip below the guys also explore the value of rye whiskeys in including WhistlePig, Pappy Van Winkle and beyond.

Watch as Priory riffs on the “man’s way” to drink whiskey, and offers up a lesson on the color of whiskey, the difference between whiskey and bourbon, and why pouring whiskey on your pancakes in the morning might just make for the most badass breakfast ever. Have we said “whiskey” enough times?
