Cliff Bleszinski on The Order: 1886: “I Want to Like it, But the Narrative is Being So Forced On Me”

The Order: 1886 released this last week, and quickly became the most discussed game around the internet. Although you’ve heard the opinion of dozens if not hundreds of other games, you probably haven’t heard what game developers have to say about it.

Well, Game Designer Cliff Bleszinski, famous for his work on Unreal Tournament and Gears of War, played a full hour of The Order: 1886 during a Twitch live stream. At the end of the stream he decided to share what he thought of his experience. It wasn’t so positive, as seen in the video above.

He said:

I want to ****ing like it, but the narrative is being so forced on me so much. Let me experience the combat. You can have QTEs, they’re not always a bad thing, but it’s so heavy in it.

He then complemented the game’s visuals, and commented on Sony’s strategy:

It certainly is ****ing gorgeous. The animations are great. But as a developer now running a studio always thinking about games costing money to make, I just see this as a ****ing big, expensive experience that the money could have been spent in some other places to get more bang per buck. Sony needs to sell their consoles. I used to always call it a system justifier. Hey, look at how good this looks. Clearly it looks better than PlayStation 3. That’s what they’re going for.

To end things, he said:

I just can’t do all the cutscenes, guys. Call me jaded.

Bleszinski’s experience largely reflects my own. While I went into the game craving a story-driven experience, its narrative didn’t capture my attention enough to keep me interested, and since the game is not only short but soft in the gameplay department, it was impossible for me to walk away from it with a smile on my face.
