SXSW 2015 Video: William ‘Dub’ Lawrence Talks ‘Peace Officer’

SXSW 2015: Peace Officer – Co-Directors and… by CraveOnline

We used to call police officers “Peace Officers,” but that label feels less and less appropriate now that the United States has begun arming the police like a military unit, and using increased force in domestic criminal encounters. The new documentary Peace Officer deals directly with the increased militarization of the police, and follows William “Dub” Lawrence, a former Sheriff who formed the very SWAT team that, decades later, was responsible for the death of Lawrence’s own son-in-law. It’s a potent film that has already earned the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary Feature at SXSW 2015.

William “Dub” Lawrence and filmmakers Brad Barber and Scott Christopherson stopped by the DailyMotion Lounge at SXSW to talk about the issues raised by Peace Officer, Lawrence’s personal experiences on both sides of the police department, and what can be done to change the increasingly dangerous dynamic between law enforcement officials and the citizens they protect.
