Madonna’s continued effort to promote Rebel Heart by posting Instagram images of famous, mostly dead people and claiming that they, too, were a #rebelheart (the hashtag is mandatory) has continued, with the singer this time making the ill-advised decision to praise the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Aside from her various ruthless attacks on the UK’s working class, Thatcher also passed a legislation in 1988 that forbade the “promotion” of homosexuality. Madonna, who is considered a “gay icon,” posted an imagine of Thatcher alongside a quote from the late PM, reading: “If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.” Madonna followed this with a caption of her own, adding: “Thank you Margaret Thatcher! #unapolgetic #rebelheart.”
This begs the question: Madonna is using the internet to upload these images, so why doesn’t she also use it to do a touch of research on the people she’s including in her ever-growing archive of “#rebelhearts”? Here’s a three-step process for the next time you decide to use a dead person of internet in order to promote your album, Madge:
- Google their name. Go to www.Google.com and type in the person’s name. You’ll see a whole bunch of results that can tell you more about the person, such as whether or not they enforced extensive mining closures that sent many of Britain’s working class plummeting into poverty, or that they didn’t like homosexuals very much.
- Go to their Wikipedia page. Go to www.Wikipedia.org and take a bit of time to read through the page dedicated to them – you’ll find plenty of information! I know it may seem like a bit of a chore, but you’re literally the most famous female pop star in the world and therefore posting messages about things you know nothing about makes you look a little dim to a whole lot of people.
- Stop using dead people to sell your albums. In fact, scrap the first two tips. Posting images of deceased people of cultural and historical relevance and claiming that they are “#rebelhearts” is a dick move. You don’t even know whether they liked your music. For all you know, they turned off the radio every time they heard ‘Like a Virgin’.
Madonna has since deleted the Instagram post, therefore making Thatcher no longer a part of the Rebel Heart alumni.
