The Vaccines Slam Decision to Make The Who Glastonbury 2015 Headliners

The Vaccines have questioned the decision to make The Who one of the headline acts of Glastonbury 2015, saying that Florence & The Machine should have been given the honour instead.

Speaking to Digital Spy, frontman Justin Young stated that he believed Florence should have been given the opportunity to take to the Pyramid Stage this year, rather than Glastonbury’s organisers giving the honour to the old guard once again.

“The Who are such a safe booking. I would’ve had Florence headline,” Young said. “I know she’s playing anyway, but people are complaining about the lack of women at the top of festival bills and the lack of new artists.

“There’s a great artist who’s huge as well and progressing in more than one sense of the word. Whether that’s your thing or not I think it would’ve been a really big statement if Glastonbury put her at the top of the bill.”

Guitarist Freddie Cowan echoed Young’s thoughts, adding: “Headlining a festival is really self-fulfilling and if you give someone the opportunity like Florence, she’d just take it and run with it and the year after she’d be headlining everything. She’s definitely a strong enough artist to step up to the plate.”

While Florence will be appearing over the course of the weekend, she would certainly be a more exciting prospect as a headliner than The Who, who have already performed on Glasto’s main stage in their later years. Headlining Glastonbury again will do nothing for The Who’s career except for giving them another paragraph on their Wikipedia page, whereas a headline slot for Florence & The Machine could propel the band into the stratosphere, which they’re certainly nearing with the impending release of their third album, How Big How Blue How Beautiful.

However, the veteran mod-rockers are confirmed to take to the Pyramid as the festival’s final headliner, alongside its other headline acts Kanye West and Foo Fighters. You’d have to expect that Florence will be in the running for a headline slot in 2016
