The Minecraft Movie Will Be Directed By Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Mac

The Minecraft Movie is set to be directed by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor Rob McElhenney, who plays Mac in the hit comedy show.

The odd choice was revealed today by Minecraft developers Mojang, who wrote in a blog post: “Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MINECON in London a couple weeks ago. He’s Rob McElhenney, and he’s going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie.”

McElhenney responded to the announcement on Twitter, tweeting: “Hey Mojang let’s do something strange and wonderful.”

The actor only has three directing credentials under his belt, having directed three episodes of Always Sunny, a TV short starring Danny DeVito and a TV movie called Pariah. McElhenney has replaced director Shawn Levy, who was attached to direct the upcoming movie last year.

I remain as skeptical as ever about the quality of The Minecraft Movie, given that it’s a game that doesn’t seem as though it’d lend itself particularly well to the silver screen, though given Hollywood’s track record with video game adaptations perhaps it’s for the best that Minecraft doesn’t have a story that they can ruin.
