Ed Sheeran has now waded into the Nicki Minaj vs. Taylor Swift Twitter row, because of course he fucking has. While the MTV VMAs have about as much cultural significance as a tub of out-of-date yogurt, it was firmly expected that the self-appointed leader of the Taylor Swift Fan Club would come in beating the drum for his mate, because a woman who single-handedly managed to make one of the biggest companies on Earth backpedal on one of their policies clearly needed a hand in this department.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Sheeran said: “I think the Minaj point is a bit redundant.
“Her point is that you have to be skinny and white to get a Video of the Year nomination, but Beyoncé’s ‘7/11’ is in there, and that is celebrating the female figure in every form.”
Minaj’s point – and it was a very valid one – was that somehow MTV overlooked ‘Anaconda’ in the Video of the Year category, despite it being arguably the most heavily discussed music video of the year. Considering MTV is the broadcasting equivalent of a Twitter trending topic, and is now altogether less concerned with credibility than it is raking in those hashtags, the absence of ‘Anaconda’ from its Video of the Year nominees list is curious to say the least. Inevitably, Taylor missed the point and took Minaj’s series of tweets, which you can read right here, as a personal attack upon her, even patronizingly inviting Minaj to join her onstage if she picked up the award.
So in steps Ed Sheeran, and despite this being a clash between some of the most famous people in the Western world, he’s still managed to make the most mundane contributions to the debate as would be humanly possible.
“I think everyone knows that Taylor has done nothing wrong in that situation,” he continued, adding: “She didn’t nominate herself for the awards. She just made some good videos and people think they’re good.”
Though Taylor missed the point, with the amount of uproar caused by the situation you would have thought that in the wake of the initial Twitter disagreement Ed would’ve made sure to ascertain exactly what Nicki’s point was before commenting, but instead he, too, has missed it by such a wide margin that he has sailed above it, and is now floating around in the stratosphere with his raggedy acoustic guitar and a trademarked Taylor Swift Fan Club t-shirt.

When you consider that Ed’s own video for ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ which features the singer/songwriter rolling around a dancefloor like a 5-year-old at a wedding, made the cut despite it inspiring roughly zero discussions, there is certainly a reason for Minaj to pause and consider that maybe MTV is exercising some bias when it comes to her output. However, Minaj should also perhaps consider that the VMAs is the one time each year that anyone actually gives a shit about MTV, so maybe this is all some elaborate scheme to have the show become even remotely as popular as that time when Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus dressed up as Beetlejuice and an Animaniac.
