Louis van Gaal has made a bold claim this week, after stating in a press conference that Ryan Giggs will likely take over from him after he leaves his post at the Premier League outfit.
The announcement was made during an event titled “An Audience with Louis van Gaal and Ryan Giggs” yesterday, in which Van Gaal addressed concerns that he overspent on Anthony Martial, the 18-year-old who commanded £36 million of Man U’s transfer budget in what will be remembered as one of the most shocking purchases of the season, despite the season having only just begun.
When asked about the reasoning behind him spending so much, Van Gaal replied: “I have not bought Martial for me, I have bought him for the next manager of Manchester United,” with him then turning to Giggs and adding: “I feel I am introducing the next manager of Manchester United.”
Van Gaal had addressed criticisms of the lack of goals scored by the club thus far, with the manager reportedly saying: “It’s bullshit if you think it’s the system why strikers aren’t scoring.”
While it may seem like something of a fairy tale for a club legend such as Giggs to be granted the managerial position when Val Gaal steps down, and the club’s owners will inevitably have a great part to play in deciding whether he is capable of taking on the role, given that Giggs has proven to be a loyal right-hand man and has been allowed access into the management side of United since stepping down from as a player for the club, he may be capable enough to take over from Van Gaal, even if it seems like a long shot for many.
With that being said, given United’s sporadic form following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure for the club, Giggs could be the miracle that United winds up needing, if Van Gaal cannot inspire the confidence that Man U was once known for.
