After it was announced today that David de Gea has signed a 4-year contract extension with Manchester United, Real Madrid have now confirmed that they have chosen to not pursue the goalkeeper when the next transfer window opens, effectively bringing an end to a transfer saga that at one point seemed like it would inevitably conclude with De Gea playing in La Liga.

According to SBNation report Lucas Navarrete, Madrid have stated that they won’t be looking to sign De Gea when the transfer window opens up again, with the Spanish giants reportedly blaming the Premier League club’s handling of the transfer for them having now lost interest.

After the announcement that De Gea would be extending his stay at Manchester, the 24-year-old released a statement, saying: “I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans.

“Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.”

This latest revelation seems to suggest that De Gea believes that it was Real Madrid who were to blame for the collapse in the transfer, with him seemingly being more than happy to sign a contract extension with United, which arguably would not be the case if they had made the potential move to Madrid difficult for him, as had previously been suggested.

However, regardless of who is to blame, Man U have certainly come out of this battle with the upper hand, having managed to keep De Gea and also get him to agree to stay with the club for the foreseeable future.
