Christopher Miller and Phil Lord Bring Serial Podcast To TV

Directors and producer Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (pictured above) are better known for their comedic brand with The LEGO MOVIE, 21 Jump Street and its sequel, and Last Man on Earth under their belt. While Miller and Lord are slated to direct the upcoming Star Wars Han Solo film, the duo have a decidedly more serious TV program in the works.

Deadline is reporting that Miller and Lord producing a TV version of Serial, the wildly popular podcast and a spinoff of the radio program This American Life that debuted last year. Serial was created by Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder, both of whom produce the series. The first season of Serial explored the murder of Hae Min Lee and the case against Adnan Syed, Lee’s former boyfriend who was convicted of killing her. Koenig hosted the Serial podcast, and the first season was downloaded over 68 million times. Serial also won a Peabody award for its first season.

For television, the Serial TV series will follow Koenig and Snyder as they make the second season of the podcast. Thus far, Koenig and Snyder have not yet revealed which case will be the focus of Serial Season 2, but there is a recurring rumor that they will examine the case against Bowe Bergdahl, the American POW who has been accused of deserting his unit after he was released during a controversial prisoner swap.

There will be at least two additional seasons of the Serial podcast. And if the Serial TV series makes the podcast even more popular than it will potentially go on beyond that.

The Serial TV series doesn’t currently have a home, but it is being produced by Fox 21 under Miller and Lord’s TV development deal. Given the Fox connection, FX would be an ideal home. But Fox 21 produces several shows for different networks, so there could be several potential suitors for it.
