Deafheaven is the band who have consistently released such unique and impressive music that they have nearly created their own genre. It doesn’t sound like anything. 2013’s Sunbather was met with both critical and fan acclaim, widely expanding their devoted followers. But how do you follow up on such great success? New Bermuda is how.
Released October 2, New Bermuda could be Deafheaven’s most brutal yet alluring album yet. Being a fan of singer/songwriter George Clark’s career and work, it can sometimes be a surprise that someone as mellow and good natured as Clark has it in him to produce such savage music. Granted the new album does have those moments of transformation, of very innocent and melodic sounding pieces, like the intro to ‘Baby Blue’ or the intro/outro of ‘Come Back’, but make no mistake, this is a unique amalgamation of metal/black metal/shoegaze.
Putting the labels aside, what matters is the music. And fans across the country have proven that if they come, they’ll go. Chicago is one of those early adopters to the Deafheaven sound, where the band is always met with an impressive crowd. Just this past summer Deafheaven played a sold out Subteranean show and headlined Wicker Park Fest.
Returning and upgrading to a bigger venue, the Metro is going to host Deafheaven on Friday, October 30th. The historic music venue on Chicago’s north side will no doubt be packed with anxious fans getting their first opportunity to hear New Bermuda since it’s recent release.
