Ever since its debut in 2010, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ modern Sherlock Holmes TV series Sherlock has been delivered to audiences as a series of three 90 minute TV movies that rivaled theatrical takes on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective. Early next year, Sherlock fans will finally get to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s Sherlock Holmes and John Watson on the big screen.
The upcoming standalone Sherlock Christmas special, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will be getting a limited theatrical release in the United States on January 5 and January 6 2016. Unlike some of the previous theatrical releases of BBC’s Doctor Who, there will only be one showing per theater of Sherlock: The Abominable Bride on each night. BBC is once again partnering with Fathom Events for the Sherlock release.
The Abominable Bride will be a standalone adventure completely separate from the regular Sherlock continuity. While Sherlock takes place in the present, The Abominable Bride will take place in Victorian England, the era in which the original Sherlock Holmes stories were set. That means that this is the first time that Cumberbatch and Freeman have played the characters as originally conceived by Conan Doyle.

For the theatrical release, Cumberbatch and Freeman will be featured in a 20 minute exclusive video on the making of The Abominable Bride. Tickets for the Sherlock: The Abominable Bride event will go on sale beginning November 6 at more than 500 theaters across the United States.
But if you don’t want to wait for the special to come to theaters, PBS is broadcasting Sherlock: The Abominable Bride on January 1 in a first-ever global debut for the series.
