Comic books are often regarded as the medium of superheroes. A place for larger than life heroes and villains to battle on an epic scale that movies couldn’t match until recently.
But the comic book medium can be much more than that. The heroes can also be a lot more down to Earth, and the consequences of their actions can be more deeply felt. Writer Mario Candelaria and artist Karl Slominski tackle an everyman hero in their new graphic novel, Ashes: A Firefighter’s Tale. Their story revolves around Matt, a New York City firefighter with everything going for him. He had friends, family, and even a son. But when Matt is gravely injured in a fire, he’ll have to rebuild his life and figure out what comes next.
