While the 2015/16 Premier League season has been fascinating to watch, with so many of the big teams failing to find a consistent run of form, Arsenal have managed to top the table with the fewest amount of points for a league leader in over a decade.
With the Gunners being the Premier League front-runners with just 39 points, the last time a club managed to top the table halfway through the season with such a low number of points was in the 2001/02 season, in which Arsenal were also again the league leaders. Since then the closest a team has been to such a low score was in the following 2002/03 season, where Arsenal were leaders again with 42 points.
In the time between 2001 and 2015, Manchester United achieved the highest number of points before the January transfer window in the 2006/07 season, while last year Chelsea had dominated their competition and bagged an impressive 46 points by this point.
Arsenal have only just managed to usurp former league leaders Leicester, who have proven to be an unlikely force this season and who share the same amount of points as Arsenal, but trail behind in terms of goal difference.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal can maintain this lead over their underdog rivals, with the London club set to take on Newcastle on January 2nd while Leicester will play Bournemouth.
