Marvel Makes It Official: Finn Jones Is Iron Fist

Last month, word broke that Marvel TV and Netflix had finally cast the lead character of Iron Fist. Today, the news is official.

Finn Jones will portray Danny Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist in the fourth Marvel original series on Netflix. Jones is best known for his long stint on Game of Thrones as Ser Loras Tyrell, and for his roles in Hollyoaks, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Life in Squares.

Roy Thomas and Gil Kane created Iron Fist in 1974 as part of Marvel’s martial arts craze. After the death of his family in the far east, Danny Rand was raised in the mystical city K’un L’un, where he learned the martial arts and discovered his ability to harness the power known as the Iron Fist. The Netflix series will find Danny Rand returning to New York for the first time since the death of his family, as “he fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.”

“Finn wonderfully blends confidence with vulnerability, making him the perfect choice as he struggles to find his place in the world,” said Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb in a statement. “Now that we’ve found our Danny Rand, we’ve completed our principal cast for the upcoming Defenders on Netflix and we are thrilled to continue to show audiences unexplored corners of the Marvel Universe.”

Jones’ casting was met by some initial backlash from fans who desperately wanted Marvel to cast an Asian Iron Fist, despite the fact that Danny Rand was always a Caucasian character. There are rumors that Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung-Fu will also appear in Iron Fist, but those reports are far from confirmed. However, it’s very likely that Iron Fist will also feature Colleen Wing, an Asian heroine and one half of the Daughters of the Dragon.

Marvel and Netflix have not yet set a premiere date for the Iron Fist series.
