Here’s a story that’s way less romantic after finding out the dude was old enough to run for Congress.

According to NBC New York, a 25-year-old Maine man was sentenced to two months in a Canadian jail after he illegally floated across the St. Croix River into Canada this week because he was “motivated by love.”

Authorities said they found John Michael Bennett in a fairly harmless state Wednesday, walking down a road in the Canadian province of New Brunswick “dripping wet.” But since he couldn’t gain legal authorization to be in Canada because of a “pending criminal mischief charge,” he was thrown in the clink and will be deported once his serves out his sentence.

Bennett said he had a damn good reason to illegally cross the St. Croix into Canada. That reason? You guessed it: He was motivated by love, and he was trying to protect his pregnant fiancée from a violent ex-boyfriend.

If that was indeed the case, then we feel for the poor bastard and actually commend him for trying to be a hero. Unfortunately for him, none of us here at Mandatory are Canadian judges. Tough one, pal.
