From turbulence to drunk dudes starting fights, we’ve all dealt with some unruly stuff on airplanes. Especially in the year 2021 as inflight disturbances skyrocket and airlines looking to make back lost profits cut more corners than a dodecahedron. But have you ever had to endure an emergency plane landing because of a bad smell? Not just a bad smell, an odor so evil it instantly strikes fear in the heart of every passenger onboard?
Such was the fate of a Frontier Airlines Flight 1159 after an unknown but distinctly foul odor crept onboard forcing pilots to take swift action. Not surprisingly, the trouble started when the flight from Norfolk, Virginia to Orlando entered the airspace above North Carolina.
Now y’all may not have had the pleasure of absorbing the sweet bouquet of Carolina’s head and shoulders via your olfactory apparatus, but they don’t call it the Tar Heel State for nothing. Just saying, dogwood country’s beauty notwithstanding, if you ever venture into North Carolina, start at the edges and work your way in – like a man who eats a tiny dose of snake venom every day – so that you build up a nice tolerance to the regional aroma powerful enough to ground a 747.
The folks on Flight 1159 weren’t so lucky. With a sudden and unbearable odor sickening passengers, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing right in the heart of Raleigh, with landing slides deployed to carry the sick and weary to the nearest La Quinta Inn. While all 102 passengers and crew survived, one person was rushed to the hospital as hazmat crews stormed the plane.
As of yet, no cause for the smell has been publicly released. But if you sniff the air closely enough, you’ll know exactly what happened up there in the skies above North Carolina.
