Elon Musk Buys Stake in Twitter (And You Thought It Couldn’t Get Any Worse)

Is Elon Musk trying to ruin everything? First, he made cars uncool. Then he started invading space and impregnated Grimes. Now, he’s coming for Twitter. The richest man in the world, with a fortune of more than $287 billion, is now the owner of a 9.2 percent stake in Twitter, making him the social media platform’s largest shareholder.

The move is a baffling one, given that Musk recently criticized Twitter for its effect on free speech.

“Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy,” he tweeted along with a poll. “Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?”

2,035,924 users voted, with 70.4 percent saying no and 29.6 percent saying yes.

Seeing as he had a captive audience, Musk kept the conversation going.

“Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?”

He then asked, “Is a new platform needed?”

The crowdsourcing continued with Musk posting yet another poll, asking, “Do you want an edit button?”

And now we hear the Tesla CEO is joining Twitter’s board of directors.

What does all this mean? Well, that remains to be seen. What is likely is Musk will continue to get more obnoxious and his ego will continue to bloat. Meanwhile, Twitter will likely become even less fun than it has in recent years.

Bazillionaires like Musk are why we can’t have nice things.
