For the past few years, FEARnet has experimented with original programs for the web. And now, the cable network is finally ready for its first original TV series.
According to Deadline, FEARnet has given a greenlight to “Holliston,” a new comedy series staring genre directors Adam Green and Joe Lynch essentially as fictional versions of themselves as they try to fulfill their dreams of becoming the next great horror directors while working at a local cable access station. The pair will also host a show within the show, called “The Movie Crypt.”
FEARnet describes the series as “‘Wayne’s World’ meets ‘Saw'” and it is expected to run alongside “Todd & the Book Of Pure Evil” and “Psychoville” on FEARnet’s “Twisted Comedy” block on Tuesday nights. Laura Ortiz (The Hills Have Eyes) and Unrest singer Corri English will co-star in the series and the report also indicates that genre legends will also make cameo appearances within the show.
“This is a show built on the memories and real-life experiences of our post-college days, wrapped in a shroud of wrongness, packed full of movie quotes and genre references, and topped off with plenty of jokes at the expense of our real-life friends and industry associates,” related Green. “No other network would have the guts to make this show; we’re pushing the boundaries of television. I mean, what other sitcom on television includes exploding heads and an imaginary alien friend who lives in the closet? We plan to really turn the traditional American sitcom on its head. It’s the first horror sitcom. A hor-icom!”
“This show has just the right amount of wrong, and you really can’t imagine it ever making it on to TV. That’s where FEARnet comes in,” added FEARnet’s president Peter Block. “Adam came to us with a truly off-the-wall series that was overflowing with a supporting cast of misfits and I-don’t-know-whats, and we knew it was a perfect fit for our ‘Twisted Comedy’ block.”
Prior to this project, Green was best known as the director “Hatchet” and “Hatchet II” as well as “Spiral,” “Frozen” and “Chillerama.” Lynch directed “Wrong Turn 2” and the upcoming comedy, “The Knights of Badassdom.”
“Holliston” will run for six episodes in its first season, with production expected to begin later this year.
