During the second season finale of “Alphas,” a specialized bomb went off in Grand Central Station and decimated Dr. Lee Rosen’s (David Strathairn) team of superpowered individuals along with several civilians, leaving their survival in question.
Unfortunately, there will be no resolution for that cliffhanger in the near future. Syfy has decided not to renew “Alphas,” effectively cancelling the series.
In a statement, a Syfy representative said “We’ve been proud to present this entertaining, high-quality series for two seasons and to work with an incredible ensemble of talented actors, producers and creatives as well as our partners at BermanBraun Television. We’d like to thank the show’s dedicated regular viewers for their tremendous support.”
“Alphas” was created by frequent Marvel movie screenwriter, Zak Penn and Michael Karnow. The series had a long road through development and “Alphas” was originally slated to go at NBC in 2007 before the network passed on it. The 2007 Writers Guild Strike derailed ABC’s attempt to bring “Alphas” to television and it languished until Syfy eventually ordered a pilot episode in 2009.
At Syfy, “Alphas” narrowly edged another super hero inspired project called “Six Inches” to get a shot on the network’s schedule. The “Alphas” pilot debuted on Syfy with 2.52 million viewers, but the series was unable to retain those numbers going into its second season. However, “Alphas” was a relatively solid performer with a devoted following. Whether that fanbase is large enough to help “Alphas” eventually stage a comeback remains to be seen.
