Comic-Con 2013: ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Panel Report

Shortly after Joss Whedon and Jeph Loeb kicked off the Comic-Con International panel for Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ Whedon joked that Disney wouldn’t allow them to show a clip… so they unveiled the entire pilot episode instead.

A few spoilers from the pilot episode will be mentioned at the end of this report. But for now, let’s just say that the pilot went over well with the crowd and raised a few interesting questions.

Joining Whedon and Loeb on the panel were executive producers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jeffrey Bell as well as series stars, Chloe Bennet, Brett Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker and Ming Na. Clark Gregg also received a loud ovation when he was introduced. Later in the panel, Gregg said that he didn’t enjoy being dead, but he loved  Coluson’s death in The Avengers. Gregg also noted that he was touched by the fan response to his character’s demise and happy that Coluson is back among the living.

Joss Whedon admitted to being excited about his new show and the cast that he assembled. Bennet noted that she had to read for her part six times before she was cast as Skye, while Dalton said that this is his first major project and his first Comic-Con. Bell gave a shout out to composer, Bear McCreary, who will be providing the music for “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” in addition to his current gig on “The Walking Dead.”

Loeb urged the crowd to chant the premiere date for “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (September 24) before the panel came to an end.

And now some spoilers from the pilot episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

The secret of Coulson’s resurrection remains a mystery. He thinks that he was only dead for a few seconds. But some of his colleagues are hiding the truth from him.

Cobie Smulders is back as Maria Hill! And she may return for a few episodes during the season.

No sign of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. But I say give it time.

J. August Richards IS playing a character from the Marvel universe. But he’s not Luke Cage or Rage. Or really anyone you’ve ever heard of before…
