Next week, The Fugitive returns in a 20th anniversary Blu-ray and DVD release. We got to interview director Andrew Davis to look back on the action classic. We’ll bring you the full interview next week, but in discussing future projects, Davis revealed a plan for a new family friendly adventure.
“I’m currently putting together a modern version of Treasure Island set in post Katrina Louisiana called Thieves Fortune,” Davis said. “It’s the treasure of Jean LaFitte and I think it could be a really interesting, fun movie that could be about something and still be very entertaining.”
Davis had a successful career in action movies like Under Siege, Above the Law and Collateral Damage, but has tried to move away from violence. His family movie Holes and Coast Guard rescue movie The Guardian reflect this and so will Thieves Fortune.
“I’ve turned down a lot of violent action movies which I don’t want to do,” Davis said. “I don’t want to make a film where violence is the entertainment. I had a great time with Holes. I’m interested in doing family movies or four quadrant movies that are based upon quality literature or books.”
Right now a team of writers, including Davis himself and Midnight Run scribe George Gallo, are working on the script. Cary Brokaw is producing. There is no studio attached currently. “Not yet,” Davis said. “[A studio] will be as soon as we get finished with the script and get a cast.”
We’ll be back with more on Thieves Fortune as soon as we search every warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in a six mile radius.
