Tech Squibs: IRIScan Book 3 Looks to Boot Desktop Scanners

This Tech Squib needs to come with some Harry Potter-ish magician incantation like “Midori Pamplona” or “Sis Boom Bah!” (…The sound a sheep makes when it explodes, by the way…) But it doesn’t.

The $100 IRIScan Book 3 is another shot across the bow of clunky desktop scanners. It’s a little magic wand of a scanner — cordless, battery powered and lightweight. About the size of a curling iron or a lightsaber (depending on how many dates you get in a year), you can it anywhere from your desk to scan documents, books, newspapers, magazines, etc.

You have the option of scanning to PDF or JPG with a 300, 600 or 900 dpi resolutions, and you can read in a page in about two to three seconds. A simple link up with your computer saves the Book 3’s content for later use. Once scanned, documents can also be reproduced as OCR with IRIScan’s free software.

After trying the item out, I can report the gadget’s most appealing factor is how space it frees up in any office or home or work space. Even these days, with devices getting ever so small, scanners still need that big footprint. When done with the Book 3, you can stick it away in a drawer — or fight off Darth Maul. Whatever you prefer…
