Exclusive Interview: Terence Winter on The Wolf of Wall Street

CraveOnline: What’s coming up next for you, movie-wise? Is Whitey Bulger coming soon?

Terence Winter: Yeah, as far as I know Ben [Affleck] is doing some work on it. I had written a script a couple of years ago. I took it up to when Whitey was arrested. Ben is I think doing some work on adding some of the stuff from the Whitey Bulger trial. I know he’s busy with other projects, including some acting, and I hope it works. He’s an incredibly talented director and somebody I would love to work with. It’s a really compelling story, obviously, and I really, really do hope we get it made.

What are you working on right now?

Right now, Marty, Mick Jagger and I are getting ready for pre-production on a new pilot for HBO set in the world of rock music in 1973, starring Bobby Cannavale. Bobby plays a kind of cocaine-fueled record executive. ’73 was the year that punk, disco and hip-hop were all invented within about a five-mile radius of each other in New York City. It was a really fun era. We’re going to be shooting that pilot in April.

Are you going to fictionalize a lot of the characters?

It’s going to be a combo. It’s sort of like what we do on “Boardwalk Empire.” We’re going to have real-life characters interacting with fictional characters. So on “Boardwalk” for example we’ve got the real Al Capone interacting with fictional characters. We’ll have real bands interacting with fictional bands also.

Are you going to have to get permission to use real people? Would that be easy with Mick Jagger involved?

You know, we want to get permission probably for certain things, but certainly having Mick Jagger at the helm of the project with Marty I think certainly paved the way in a lot smoother fashion.

This is not so much a question, more of a request, but the next time you see Mick Jagger tell him someone out there really loves his performance in Freejack.

[Laughs]

I think he gives a legitimately great performance in Freejack. I love that movie.

I will absolutely share that with him. I’m sure he’d love to hear that.
