The 2014 Australian Open wasn’t an overly successful campaign for the nation’s local stars, however the Aussie tennis community can look to the future thanks to the emergence of a couple of teenage up and comers, namely Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Richard Gasquet made light work of Kyrgios in a recent Davis Cup meet between France and Australia, winning 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 6-2 in a clay court encounter, but the world No.9 says the future is bright for our 18-year-old newcomer.
“It’s because of his age, he’s only 18 years old,” said the French star.
“His size also, he’s very tall (195cm), his serve is wonderful and his forehand stroke is gigantic.
“If he works hard, and if he continues on this path, he will be in the top ten.
Gasquet went on to compliment Kyrgios’ attitude and personality, saying the youngster was “capable of winning big tournaments”.
Australian men’s tennis isn’t in the strongest spot with former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt nearing retirement and heavily hyped youngster Bernard Tomic struggling to keep his career on track, but some recent success at grand slams could mean Kyrgios is set for big things.
Kyrgios won his first Grand Slam match at last year’s French Open before making a run at last month’s Aussie Open in which he lost a five-set second round marathon to Frenchman Benoit Paire.
However Kyrgios isn’t our lone hope to carry the torch forward; Thanasi Kokkinakis is another star on the rise.
The 17-year-old Kokkinakis is yet to complete Year 12, but also drew a ton attention when he lost to finalist Rafael Nadal 2-6 4-6 2-6 in the second round, described by the Spaniard as having ”fantastic potential”.
Both players are in contention for the reverse singles on Sunday.
