Chilean Miners Sledge Socceroos In World Cup Promo Ad

Banco de Chile, major sponsor of the Chilean national football team, have produced an inspirational advert to pump up the country’s population of 17 million ahead of next month’s World Cup in Brazil, but the advert featuring the 33 Chilean mine survivors is also a massive snub to the Australian Socceroos.

The bank brought to together the survivors of the 2010 Copiapo mine accident which made international headlines over the course of the 69 days rescue attempt. In the ad, the miners return to the disaster site and deliver an inspirational message to their team while filling jars of the soil to take to Brazil, declaring the country is not afraid of the “group of death”.

The uplifting spot features the mine leader commenting on Group B opponents and 2010 finalists.

“Spain is hard, Holland is hard but we are not scared of the death group because we have already beaten death before,” he screams, openly ignoring our young Socceroos, Chile’s opening opponent on June 13.

The Socceroos are being overlooked, even classified as the worst side heading to Brazil, based on the team’s youthful core and poor form over the past year. But the Chileans have apparently overlooked a similar snub ahead of Australia’s campaign at the 2006 World Cup in Germany where Japan’s Brazilian coach Zico told reporters, “We are in a very tough group. Croatia and Brazil are very good.” The Socceroos went on to destroy Japan 3-1 and advance to the next stage.
