Some dogs get a bad rep for being “violent,” despite there not necessarily being any facts to support this theory. Poor owners lead to ill-behaved and dangerous dogs, and photographer Douglas Sonders is no poor owner. After visiting a pet shelter to take home a new pet, Douglas found Emma, a pit bull mix who had struggled to find a new home due to her breed. This inspired Douglas to set up NotaBully.org, a website dedicated to increasing awareness of the loving side of perceived “bully” dogs, in order to make aspiring dog owners less hesitant about adopting them.
Below is a gallery highlighting the friendly nature of these dogs, who would’ve all been put down were it not for owners taking a chance on them and ignoring the media’s diatribe. Remember, the pit bull isn’t an inherently violent dog: it’s the owners that encourage them to be violent, due to the breed’s adeptness at fighting.
