Back in 2008, Dan Abnett was the co-creator of the modern day incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy team that will get their big screen debut later this summer. But the original Guardians of the Galaxy date back to 1969, when Arnold Drake and Gene Colan introduced them as a band of intergalactic freedom fighters in the 31st century.
This fall, Abnett is bringing back the original Guardians of the Galaxy in Guardians 3000 # 1, with artist Gerardo Sandoval. The new series will spin out of Abnett and Sandoval’s backup story in Guardians of the Galaxy # 14.

From the cover image, it appears that the lineup of Guardians 3000 will include Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Yondu, Martinex and Starhawk. The two most prominent female members of the original Guardians, Nikki and Aleta may not be in this new incarnation of the team.
While speaking with Newsarama, Abnett said “True to the original tales, they are trying to save the future from the menace of the Badoon. I wanted to keep that element, and indeed try not to do anything to deny any continuity. So they are freedom fighters, first and foremost, facing an immensely hostile culture. However, they soon discover that the Badoon are just the tip of the iceberg, essentially opportunists taking cosmic advantage of a much deeper crisis.”
“As Starhawk deduces, the very future itself is in danger,” continued Abnett.“History and causality are unraveling and repeating themselves, and not in a friendly Groundhog Day way.”
Guardians 3000 # 1 will land in October.
