Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk is writing a sequel to his 1996 cultural sensation, to be serialised as a 10-issue comic book for Dark Horse Comics. The series will take place 10 years after the events of the book and the 1999 film starring Brad Pitt and Ed Norton.
Palahniuk told The Guardian that while the first book was “such a tirade against fathers” and the worries of youth, the sequel will revisit the characters “from the father’s perspective.” The comic will see the book’s unnamed protagonist married to Marla Singer and raising a nine-year-old son.
The author also said that the sequel will further explore the character of Tyler Durden and his true origin. “Tyler is something that maybe has been around for centuries and is not just this aberration that’s popped into his mind,” he said.
And Palahniuk must be excited, he even broke the first rule of Fight Club at Comic-Con last year. “I messed up and said I was doing the sequel in front of 1,500 geeks with telephones,” he told The Guardian. “Suddenly, there was this big scramble to honour my word.”
Palahniuk will be honouring his word in May 2015, when the maxi-series is expected to debut. The continued tale of “The Narrator” will be illustrated by Cameron Stewart (The Invisibles, Batman & Robin), who said he’ll be using a “cartoony” style that captures both the depth and humour of the Fight Club story.
Readers can also likely expect plenty of carnage in the sequel, because according to Palahniuk, Project Mayhem is still alive and well.
