Comic-Con 2014: ‘Arrow’ Season 3 Villain Revealed

Last season on “Arrow,” Oliver Queen narrowly defeated Deathstroke aka Slade Wilson thanks to the help of the League of Assassins. But next season, Oliver probably shouldn’t expect any assistance from the League.

At DC Entertainment’s three hour TV panel at Comic-Con International, the “Arrow” producers confirmed the rumor that Ra’s al Ghul will be the primary villain of “Arrow” Season 3. Ra’s al Ghul was mentioned by name several times during the second season of “Arrow” and he is the leader of the League of Assassins. Oliver’s former lover, Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) is also a member of the League after the events of the season 2 finale.

As originally created by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams in 1971, Ra’s al Ghul was a Batman villain who operated on an international scale as he attempted to “save” the world… by exterminating most of the human race. Liam Neeson portrayed Ra’s al Ghul in Batman Begins. The “Arrow” exxecutive producers have not yet cast the role for the TV series.

“Arrow” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently said that “the villain in season three is that he doesn’t necessarily disagree with [Oliver]. He doesn’t have any personal animus towards the Arrow, and he actually in some ways has a very similar worldview. [But] the Arrow is thinking too small. ‘Being Oliver Queen is what’s holding you back from fulfilling your true destiny.’ So it’s a very interesting dynamic, but it is tied in the same way that Oliver last year was wrestling with, ‘Am I a hero or a killer?’ The theme of identity is tied up very much in how the villain is presented to Oliver.”

The Ra’s al Ghul reveal came at the end of the new “Arrow” Season 3 trailer, which also served as a reminder that Ra’s al Ghul is also an enemy of Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman).

“Arrow” returns to The CW on Wednesday, October 8.
