Feeling bummed that EA Access will require an annual Xbox Live Gold subscription? Well, have I got a solution for you — move to China! And buy a new Xbox One, and then move back to North America or Europe and subscribe to EA Access. To be honest, I have no idea if that would even work, but it’s fun to think about.
Regardless, all Xbox Ones sold in China when the console launches on September 23rd will come loaded with free Xbox Live Gold access from the purchase date through March 2015, no questions asked. The system will sell for ¥3,699, which equates to about $599 US Dollars. Though seemingly steep compared to the console’s $399 pricetag in the US, it’s a lot cheaper than smuggling an Xbox into the territory used to cost. A lot cheaper.

Microsoft is also planning a special “Day One” edition, which will include the Kinect, a controller, a “Day One” achievement, and Kinect Sports Rivals, Forza Motorsport 5, the Neverwinter Online Commemorative Edition Pack, and Powerstar Golf. Not only that, but all titles will be loaded with in-game credit. Special edition, indeed.
The Day One edition is being made possible by a partnership with BesTV, which is an enormous entertainment distribution company in China. Microsoft is also partnering with the company to deliver streaming entertainment content on its console, including sports, movies, documentaries, and more. Xbox One buyers also earn two free movies per month with their purchase.
To be honest, I’m a bit stunned at how good of a deal Microsoft is offering; I suppose it can be attributed to the company’s fierce desire to strike first and make a splash in the Chinese console market. We’ll have to wait and see if the investment pays off, but given the state of Xbox One sales in other territories, any win is a win worth fighting for.
