Next year, Supergirl is coming to television.
Two weeks ago, reports emerged that a “Supergirl” TV series was in development. Deadline is reporting that CBS closed a deal last night that gives “Supergirl” a series commitment. Supposedly, the “Supergirl” contract is even bigger than the one that Fox signed last year to scoop up “Gotham.”
Although it’s not clear if the show will be called “Supergirl,” the proposed TV series will take place when Kara Zor-El is on the cusp of becoming a heroine. “Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler wrote the “Supergirl” pitch and they will serve as executive producers on the project. Berlanti is also executive producer on “Arrow” and “The Flash” for The CW. With the deal, ABC is now the only broadcast network without a DC Comics inspired TV show on its schedule. That won’t change anytime soon, since Disney owns ABC and Marvel.
Supergirl was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino in 1959. In 1985, Helen Slater starred as the title character in the Supergirl movie. On “Smallville,” Kara Zor-El was played by Laura Vandervoort.
The “Supergirl” TV series will be broadcast on CBS in 2015.
