American alternative rock band Imagine Dragons have been announced as this year’s Grey Cup Halftime Show performers.
Made up of vocalist Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne “Wing” Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and drummer Daniel Platzman, the band has amassed an impressive roster of awards that includes five Billboard Music Awards, a Grammy, and an American Music Award for their debut album, Night Visions, which came out in 2012.
“This is a dynamic young band that reflects today’s CFL and the excitement that has always surrounded our biggest game and Canada’s biggest party, the Grey Cup,” Sara Moore, the CFL’s vice-president of marketing and events, said in a statement (as reported by CBC Sports). “The millions who saw Imagine Dragons steal the show at this year’s Grammy Awards, where they won a Grammy for best rock performance, will know how exciting it is that they will command Canada’s biggest stage.”
“We’re thrilled to be coming to the Grey Cup to entertain CFL fans in Vancouver and right across Canada,” lead singer Reynolds said in the same article. “Canada has supported us from the beginning so it’s always exciting to go back.”
The decision by the CFL is getting mixed response because of the non-Canadian roots of Imagine Dragons.
The Grey Cup will take place on November 1st and will be broadcast on TSN and RDS in Canada and on ESPN2 in the U.S.
