Wanderers Shock Saudi Powerhouse

The Western Sydney Wanderers have the advantage heading into the second leg of the Asian Champions League Final after they defeated Al Hilal 1-0 at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday night.

Substitute Tomi Juric netted the winner in the 64th minute from a perfect Antony Golec cross. In what was the return to club football after a month out for the Socceroo player, Juric caused havoc for the tourists and systematically changed the momentum of the match.

Saudi Arabian champions Al Hilal dominated the match up to moment the goal went in for the Wanderers. With 69% possession in the first half and 65.6% for the match, Al Hilal would be ruing not converting their territorial advantage into points.

In front of over 20,000 fans, the Wanderers have shown that they have what it takes to be crowned champions as they head to play in Saudi Arabia next week. Goal keeper Ante Covic, who made several crucial interceptions and saves throughout the match was thrilled with his sides performance.

“All around the park they are a quality side, with some great players but they never broke us down which is credit to us,” Covic said.

Saudi international player Nassir Alsharani missed a golden opportunity to score right in front of goal, kicking over the top in a one-on-one with Covic. The veteran keeper was called on again late in the match (88th) to deny Brazillian striker Neves Thiago who connected with a long cross acrobatically, but could not beat the committed stopper.

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic left it until the 58th minute to bring Juric on, seeking to nurse his key player back to full match health. This key substitution came at a perfect time, as did the match-winner minutes later from an elated Juric.

“We had a tough job today, I think the boys did a great job in defence and in attack as well,” said Juric.

The Wanderers travel to Saudi Arabia to play the second leg. Up 1-0 on aggregate, they will be hoping to use the momentum generated by such a positive home result.
