DC Comics Announces Convergence Event

For several months, rumors have been flying that DC Comics was planning an event miniseries far in advance to run during the company’s move from New York to Burbank. Today, DC confirmed that the rumors were true.

Via USA Today, DC announced that its entire line up of superhero comics will go on hold for two months. In place of those comics, DC will publish a nine part miniseries called Convergence alongside 40 miniseries that will run for two issues each beginning in April 2015.

As hinted in The New 52: Futures End and Earth 2: World’s End, Convergence will feature the return of several of the classic versions of DC’s characters, including the Justice Society, Gen 13, the Crime Syndicate, the Charlton Comics heroes, the Tangent heroes and even Donna Troy and other characters who haven’t appeared since before Flashpoint.

Bringing these various characters together is Telos, a new villain who is somehow connected to Brainiac. While the 40 miniseries will have several different artists and writers attached to them, the main Convergence miniseries will be written by Jeff King, the executive producer of “Continuum” and “White Collar” in his comic book debut. Veteran comics scribe Dan Jurgens will co-write Convergence # 0 with King, while Ethan Van Sciver will supply the art. The remaining eight issues of Convergence will feature the art team of Carlo Pagulayan and Stephen Segovia, with Ivan Reis and Joe Prado on covers.

While speaking with USA Today, DC Comics co-publisher, Dan Didio said that “[Convergence] captures the full essence and scope of DC’s incredible history and storytelling… There is a story and a character for every generation of DC Comics fan.”

DC’s other co-publisher, Jim Lee added that “What we’re really addressing is they all exist and have existed and exist within the framework of the New 52… Convergence is in many ways the most meta epic event we’ve done.”

Convergence # 0 will be released on April 1, 2015; following the conclusions of The New 52: Futures End and Earth 2: World’s End.
