The Fantastic Four Reboot Gets an Official Synopsis

Josh Trank’s The Fantastic Four, the reboot of the superhero franchise that no one particularly cared for, has been in production since January, and it’s coming to theaters in less than a year. And yet we still know next to nothing about it. Dr. Doom is a blogger now, apparently, but there’s been a surprising lack of official information or set photos to remind us to get excited that the Fantastic Four are coming back to the big screen with an all-new lease on life, and hope for a better franchise this time out.

Fortunately, 20th Century Fox has finally decided to reveal the official synopsis of The Fantastic Four (via Coming Soon), which stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell and Tim Blake Nelson.

These sorts of press releases are typically vague, and this one is no exception, but there is enough to interest us here at CraveOnline:

“‘The Fantastic Four,’ a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.”

So instead of traveling to outer space and getting bombarded with Cosmic Rays, this new Fantastic Four travels to another dimension, not unlike the Ultimate version of the heroes. In that series the Fantastic Four got their powers in an attempt to explore The Negative Zone, home to such villains as Blastaar and Annihilus.

“A former friend turned enemy” could refer to Victor Von Doom – sorry, Victor Domashev – or also Harvey Elder, who in the Ultimate Fantastic Four series started out as the Fantastic Four’s professor before become the sewer-dwelling, monster farming Mole Man.

A trailer for Josh Trank’s reboot is bound to surface sooner or later, but until then this will have to do for fans excited about this new reboot. The Fantastic Four hits theaters on August 7, 2015.
