If President Donald J. Trump tells you to eat the meatloaf, you eat the meatloaf. At least you do if you’re New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

According to NBC News, Christie and his wife Mary Pat dined at the White House on Tuesday. Two days later, the governor discussed that lunch with a sports talk radio show in New York. According to Christie, Trump indicated the menu and instructed his dining companions to order whatever they wanted. Except for Christie. The President decided on meatloaf for himself and his fellow Republican, a man notorious for being a doormat when it comes to Trump.

“This is what it’s like to be with Trump,” Christie told the radio show. “He says, ‘There’s the menu, you guys order whatever you want.’ And then he says, ‘Chris, you and I are going to have the meatloaf.’” Per Christie, Trump continued, “I’m telling you, the meatloaf is fabulous.” (We’re surprised he didn’t say “tremendous.”) During their beefy meal, Trump and Christie reportedly talked about the opioid epidemic.

We don’t have firsthand experience with that kind of habit-forming substance, but we can attest to the addictive nature of meatloaf. How might one make a meatloaf as amazing as the one they serve at the White House? Glad you asked. This classic American entrée is one of the easiest recipes to replicate. You’ll be hard-pressed to stop at one serving, but no judgment. It’s near impossible to imagine either of the aforementioned politicians being able to exercise portion control, either. But have some manners and get consent before slapping it down on your dining companion’s plate.

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup ketchup, divided
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup Italian-style bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 pound lean ground beef

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, combine eggs, 1/2 cup ketchup, milk, bread crumbs, onion, and ground beef; mix well. Transfer mixture into ungreased glass loaf pan. Bake for 40 minutes. Remove meatloaf from oven and spread remaining 1/2 ketchup evenly over top. Return meatloaf to oven and bake an additional 15 to 20 minutes. (Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness. Meatloaf is done when it reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit.) Let cool 10 minutes before serving with all-American sides like mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. (Adapted from Betty Crocker.)
