The late musician and purple-lover Prince now has his very own color courtesy The Pantone Color Institute. The hue, titled “Love Symbol #2,” is an audacious purple based on the shade of Prince’s one-of-a-kind Yamaha piano.

The standardized custom color honors the singer’s purple obsession, solidified with the 1984 release of the movie Purple Rain. Prince’s song by the same name was part of the film’s Academy Award-winning soundtrack; Prince himself won several Grammys and a Golden Globe Award for the film.

“The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever,” said Troy Carter, entertainment adviser to Prince’s Estate.

Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute added, “We are honored to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, ‘the purple one.’ A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style. Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”

“While the spectrum of the color purple will still be used in respect to the ‘Purple One,’ Love Symbol #2, will be the official color across the brand he left behind,” Pantone said in a press release. The company hinted at further color collaborations with The Prince Estate; look for products in the unique hue coming to market in the future.

But there’s no need to restrict yourself to only Love Symbol #2. Any shade of purple will infuse any room with a brash vibe, so long as you incorporate the color judiciously and don’t overdo it. Prince wasn’t known for moderation, but when adding color to your home, it’s better to do so subtly. Here are a few ideas to get you started on honoring Prince’s spirit in your living space.
