Almost all healthy diets you come across on the web ask you to forget about alcohol in all its forms. Does this mean that the drinking enthusiasts out there are destined to stay fat no matter what they do? Are there no other options? It’s funny you should ask – there are. Low carb beer is the latest craze among those diet enthusiasts out there who simply won’t give up that sweet problem-solving beverage. If you want to get in on this, here is some basic information and various beer types explained.

Why Is Beer Unhealthy?

First of all, beer is not unhealthy. People who say that are most likely misinformed or misunderstood. There is a connection between alcohol and weight loss, though. A number of studies over the years have shown that alcohol beverages (like beer) can actually be beneficial for your health. In small, controlled amounts, alcohol can help with digestion, blood flow, stress, etc. Of course, if you drink too much, the effects will be reversed. As it is the case with pretty much everything in this world, moderation is the key. As long as you can control yourself and drink sensibly, beer can be good for you.

What Is Low Carb Beer?

Now, one of the main problems with beer is not just the alcohol in it, but the carbohydrates that come with. Unlike wine, beer usually contains a lot of carbs, the bad ones. It is said that one glass contains about 13 grams which is a lot compared to 2 grams found in red and white wine. That being said, the amount really depends on the manufacturers and brewing process. If you want to preserve your health and lose weight while drinking, low carb beer is your best option. In order to know which ones are low-carb ones, you need to acquaint yourself with different types of beer, first.

Light Beers

As we’ve mentioned before, a regular glass of beer usually contains about 13 grams of carbs but that’s just an average. Some beers have less, others have more and it all depends on the type of beer and the beer-making process. You’ve probably heard of the advertised “light” beers but what does that mean? A light beer is basically the same as a low carb beer, except that the latter is a more specialized category. A light beer can have anything from 2 to 4 or 5 carbs. Basically, all American light beers are OK even for strict low carb diets. How long does it take to get into ketosis, paleo diet or intermittent fasting? What brands are we talking about here? Well, those are beers like Michelob Ultra, Bud Select 55, Busch Light and other similar products. Note that the Bud Select 55 has below 2 grams, which makes it even lighter than wine.

Low Carb Specialty Beers

If you enjoy specialty beers that offer something more to your taste buds, there are a couple of them you need to try right now. First up is the intriguing Shock-Top line of beers that offer a unique aftertaste but don’t overdo it with the carbs. For example, the Honey Bourbon Shock-Top is brewed with honey and caramel malt that gives it a distinctly sweet taste afterward, combined with the touch of bourbon from the cask. Another specialty beer you should try is certainly Hurricane High Gravity Malt Liquor. There is never more than 5 grams of carbs in the Hurricane so it’s good for your diet. Don’t be fooled by its lightness, though, as the Hurricane contains about 8 percent of alcohol. The fans of this brand state that it has a rich flavor and a sweet, pleasant aftertaste. In any case, it’s much better for your health and your diet.
