Spotify Users on Android Warned to Change Passwords After Hack

Spotify users on Android devices have been told to change their passwords after a user’s account was hacked.

Though only one account was hacked, Spotify is still taking precautions and has therefore asked all users to update their password on the music streaming service, in order to ensure that this is only an isolated incident and isn’t something that could affect its other users.

Spotify CEO Oskar Stal said in a statement: “Our evidence shows that only one Spotify user’s data has been accessed and this did not include any password, financial or payment information.

“We have contacted this one individual. Based on our findings, we are not aware of any increased risk to users as a result of this incident. We take these matters very seriously and as a general precaution will be asking certain Spotify users to re-enter their username and password to log in over the coming days.

“As an extra safety step, we are going to guide Android app users to upgrade over the next few days. If Spotify prompts you for an upgrade, please follow the instructions.”

It is likely that Spotify’s swiftness in responding to the hack is due to the delay in which eBay informed its users of a security breach last week, when a database was accessed by hackers that revealed the personal information of the site’s users. Spotify will want to be seen as being on top of these kinds of things, and though this only appears to be a minor issue, it’s nonetheless commendable that the company has been so quick to inform its users and customers.
