Google+ is now widely regarded as being a failed experiment, and Google co-founder Sergey Brin has claimed that its failure is due to him being “not a very social person” and “kind of a weirdo”.
Speaking at Re/code’s Code Conference, Brin discussed how Google+ had struggled to take off as a social networking platform, saying: “It was probably a mistake for me to be working on anything tangentially related to social to begin with.”
Brin also stated how Google’s ambition to posit Google+ as a contender for Facebook’s spot on the social networking throne was misguided, and that he is now distancing him from Google+ to the company’s secret range of Google X projects.
While Brin’s comments are admirably candid, it’s not like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is especially known for being a hugely social person, either. Google+ didn’t fail because of its creators lack of awareness when it comes to social conventions, but because of how it was forced down our throats at every opportunity despite it offering nothing of value.
Regardless, we’re just happy to see Google stepping away from Google+ now.
