‘BMW Art Cars’ Book Smashes Autos into Artists

In the 1970s, the great sculptor, painter and engineer Alexander Calder designed a decorated BMW – a 3.0 CSL. From there, art lover and automotive enthusiast Herve Poulian worked with BMW to bring that car to life. Sixteen more cars would get the same treatment from other international artists.

The new tome, BMW Art Cars, presents a look at 17 artists who designed BMWs over the years — including David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol.

The $49.95 hardcover book was written and compiled by Iria Candela, Eva Karcher and Ulrich Lehmann. It presents classic, coffee table photos of the cars that resulted from these artist/automaker collaborations, along with background stories on how the car in question came to be. It’s a must read for anyone who loves the BMW line or who is interested in pop art.
