For a taste of Islay Single Malt Scotch Whiskey, all you need is the luck of finding one of Only 750 bottles — and about $3,000.
The 40-year-old Bunnahabhain was released in 2012, numbered by hand and signed by master distiller, Ian MacMillan. If you can find it via an international distributor, it runs about $3,000 or around $300 per shot. Mixing it with soda is punishable by death.
During Whisky Live Sandton 2013, Bunnahabhain gave a few whisky enthusiasts at the show the chance to taste this whisky in a private tasting led by Ian MacMillan. If you weren’t one of the 15 people, Bunnahabhain makes 10-year-old, too.

According to MacMillan, “Apart from the fact that the whisky spent four decades maturing, there are very few 40-year-old whiskies from Islay. In addition, Bunnahabhain is the only distillery on Islay not to use peated malted barley when crafting single malts and as a result, the fruity, character of the whisky is more pronounced. Due to the close proximity to the sea of the warehouses where the casks are stored during maturation, a noticeable sea influence is evident in the finish.”
“The nose is inviting with apple pie, cinnamon, vanilla ice cream and milk chocolate. Salted popcorn. Molasses and a suggestion of sweet bonfire smoke develop over time and leads to a sweet and fruity palate, which dries slowly. The finish is long with black pepper, musty oak, and a hint of smoke.”
